The opening day in Grandtully saw titles decided across the Junior and U23 K1, C1 and C2 categories, confirming the depth and variety of the field assembled in Scotland for this year’s Championships.

After the first day of competition, France leads the provisional medal standings with 4 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals, just ahead of Czechia, which collected 3 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze. Host nation Great Britain sits third thanks to two gold medals in the women’s C2 events.

First champions crowned on the River Tay

The first title of the day in Women’s K1 Junior went to Marilu Brambilla of Italy, who won in 15:53.79 ahead of Jitte Onsia of Belgium and fellow Italian Milla Lazzarotto.

In Women’s K1 U23, Anna Retkova of Czechia took gold in 15:23.36, with Freya Pryce of Great Britain second and Kristina Novosadova of Czechia third.

The men’s canoe events then produced two new champions. In Men’s C1 Junior, Petar Habek of Croatia claimed victory in 16:51.60, finishing ahead of Gabriel Dominique Daniel Auvolat of France and Diego Efrem Babato of Italy. In Men’s C1 U23, Gaetan Rousseau of France led the field in 16:32.87, followed by Matej Vanek and Matous Beier, both of Czechia.

One of the closest races of the day came in Men’s K1 Junior, where Enno Roggenbrodt of Germany edged Robin Tapissier of France by just 0.25 seconds, with Alessandro Monaro of Italy taking bronze.

The Men’s K1 U23 title went to Leandre Beaulande Noel of France in 14:01.23. Finn Vogler of Germany was second, only 2.91 seconds behind, while Lean Bogaerts of Belgium completed the podium.

In the women’s canoe categories, Sandra Bergmannova of Czechia took the Women’s C1 Junior title ahead of Valerie Capska, also of Czechia, and Camille Fourotte of France. In Women’s C1 U23, Eve Vitali-Guilbert of France secured gold, with Anna Retkova of Czechia adding a second medal to her day in silver and Laura Fontaine of France taking bronze.

C2 titles complete a busy opening program

The late afternoon program brought the C2 events and more success for several of the leading nations.

In Men’s C2 Junior, Pavel Safarik and Jachym Hanzel of Czechia took gold in 15:57.16. France followed with silver through Gabriel Dominique Daniel Auvolat and Emile Pichard, and bronze through Elouan Bezilles and Anael Canevet.

France returned to the top of the podium in Men’s C2 U23, where Dimitri Tostain and Jerome Payen won in 16:14.00. Matous Beier and Karel Rasner of Czechia were second, while Jaromir Ivanecky and Michal Dubovicky of Slovakia claimed bronze.

Great Britain celebrated home success in the women’s doubles. In Women’s C2 Junior, Ciara Maloney and Elsie Landsborough won gold ahead of Tereza Marouskova and Valerie Capska of Czechia, with Elea Lutinier and Judih Perez of France taking bronze.

Another British victory followed in Women’s C2 U23, where Kerry Christie and Emma Christie topped the podium. Pavla Jilkova and Magdalena Mala of Czechia finished second, while Sara Kopp and Mia Schlaeppi of Switzerland took bronze.

Provisional medal table after Day 1

France and Czechia both closed the day with 11 total medals, but France holds first place on the table thanks to its four gold medals, one more than Czechia.

Importantly, all categories contested on Wednesday met the minimum participation criteria required for European Championship titles to be awarded.

Attention now turns to Team Classic

The Championships continue on Thursday 13 August with the Team Classic competition.

According to the provisional start list, racing begins at 09:00 with Men’s K1 Junior, followed by Women’s K1 Junior at 09:18. The Men’s K1 U23 teams start from 10:20, with Women’s K1 U23 following from 10:46.

The canoe events continue with Men’s C1 Junior from 11:06 and Men’s C1 U23 from 13:00. The afternoon program then includes Women’s C1 U23 from 13:16 and Men’s C2 U23 from 14:40.

After Wednesday’s individual racing, several nations will enter Thursday with clear momentum. France and Czechia already look set for another close battle at the top of the standings, while Great Britain will hope to carry its women’s C2 success into the team events on home water.

With the first titles now decided, Grandtully moves into its second competition day with the Team Classic events ready to bring a new dimension to the Championships.
