Five years apart, two Danish champions and one remarkable connection.

At the 2021 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Copenhagen, Emma Jørgensen gave the home crowd one of the defining moments of the championships when she won the Women’s K1 200m.

It was Denmark’s first World Championship title in the event.

Behind her that afternoon was Hungary’s Anna Lucz, who took silver.

On Sunday in Poznań, the Women’s K1 200m World Championship podium produced an extraordinary echo of that race.

This time it was Frederikke Hauge Mørcke wearing Danish colours on the top step.

And once again, Anna Lucz finished second.

Mørcke powered to the world title in 39.71, with Lucz finishing 0.60 seconds behind. Spain’s Sara Ouzande completed an entirely European podium, one second behind the new World Champion.

For Denmark, it was only the second Women’s K1 200m World Championship title in history. The first had been won at home. The second has now been won away from Danish waters.

From teammates to Danish K1 200m World Champions

There is an even stronger connection between Denmark’s two champions.

Jørgensen and Mørcke have not simply represented two different generations of Danish women’s kayak. They have been World Champions together.

At the 2023 World Championships in Duisburg, Jørgensen and Mørcke – then competing under the name Frederikke Hauge Matthiesen – formed Denmark’s Women’s K2 500m crew.

They had only started paddling together earlier that year. By August, they were World Champions.

The Danish pair won the K2 500m title in 1:39.856, ahead of Poland’s Martyna Klatt and Helena Wiśniewska and Germany’s Paulina Paszek and Jule Hake.

At the time, Jørgensen described the speed of their progression as almost difficult to believe. Three years later, the connection has gained another chapter.

The two Danish women who once shared a World Championship K2 are now also the only two Danish paddlers to have won the Women’s K1 200m world crown.

The same silver medallist, five years later

Anna Lucz provides another remarkable link between the two races.

In Copenhagen in 2021, Jørgensen won in 39.98, with Lucz taking silver in 40.71.

Five years later in Poznań, the Hungarian again reached the World Championship final. Again, she finished second.

But this time it was Mørcke standing ahead of her.

Few podiums can create such a direct bridge between two editions separated by five years:

For Lucz, it represents another major World Championship medal. For Denmark, it looks almost like a passing of the baton.

European Champion in June, World Champion in August

Mørcke’s victory should not be considered an isolated breakthrough.

Her 2026 season had already established her among Europe’s leading 200m paddlers.

At the Paddle Europe Sprint Championships in Montemor-o-Velho in June, the 25-year-old won the Women’s K1 200m European title in 39.345.

She then continued to feature among the leading boats on the World Cup circuit.

In Brandenburg she collected silver in the K1 200m, finishing just 0.20 seconds behind China’s Mengdie Yin.

In Montreal, she added another podium with bronze in 39.464.

Then came Poznań.

European Champion in June.

World Champion in August.

It completes an outstanding season in the shortest women’s kayak event on the programme.

A World Champion in a very different boat

What also makes Mørcke’s progression interesting is the variety within her international career.

Her World Championship breakthrough came not individually, but over 500 metres in a K2 alongside Jørgensen.

Her athlete profile even lists the K2 500m as her preferred event. Mørcke began paddling at Lyngby Canoe Club in 2011 and has represented Denmark internationally from junior and U23 level upwards.

Yet three years after becoming a World Champion over 500 metres in a crew boat, her next world crown has arrived in perhaps the most individual form possible.

Denmark’s next chapter

Emma Jørgensen remains one of the defining figures of modern Danish canoe sprint.

Her Olympic and World Championship achievements set a standard that transformed expectations around Denmark’s women’s kayak programme.

But Sunday in Poznań demonstrated that the story does not end with one athlete.

Five years after Jørgensen became Denmark’s first Women’s K1 200m World Champion, her former World Championship-winning K2 partner has become the second.

From Emma Jørgensen to Frederikke Hauge Mørcke, Denmark has found a new World Champion – and one of the shortest races on the programme has produced one of the strongest European stories of the final day.
