Thrilling Opening Day Launches the 2026 Paddle Europe Freestyle Championships

Thrilling Opening Day Launches the 2026 Paddle Europe Freestyle Championships 10.6.2026
The 2026 Paddle Europe Freestyle Championships officially got underway on Wednesday morning, with athletes facing a challenging and highly dynamic feature that immediately tested both skill and strategy.

The competition venue offered a unique combination of risk and reward. Competitors needed exceptional precision, timing, and power to execute scoring tricks in exactly the right position, working with the feature rather than against it. While the possibility of flushing remained a constant threat, athletes willing to take risks were rewarded with spectacular aerial moves and high-scoring rides.

In the Women's Kayak preliminary round, the favourites lived up to expectations. Poland's Zofia Tula and Great Britain's Leah Hough secured the top two positions and comfortably advanced to the semi-finals. One of the biggest surprises of the day came from Finland's Taru Terni, who delighted the home crowd by finishing third overall.

Joining them in the semi-finals are Great Britain's Isabella Wormall, Poland's Agata Sobieraj Jakubiec, Austria's Jasmin Stangl-Brachnik, Germany's Naya Daruwala, Spain's Mireia Serres Segarra, Finland's Outi Lahti, and Spain's Nuria Fontané i Masó.

The Finnish team had particular reason to celebrate, as two Finnish women advanced to the semi-finals on home water — a historic achievement for the host nation. Both athletes expressed their excitement after qualification and their determination to continue improving in the next round.

The Junior Men's competition produced some of the most exciting action of the day. The level of performance was exceptionally high, with numerous athletes delivering impressive rides and posting scores well above expectations. However, the biggest surprise came with the elimination of Great Britain's Jamie Rowland, one of the pre-event favourites and fifth-place finisher at the most recent World Championships.

Leading the qualification round was Germany's Lukas Ramsayer, followed by Great Britain's Sam Worgan and Math Cradock. France's Arthur Genovese and Manyh Hammacha, alongside Norway's Noah Pedersen, completed the top six positions. Remarkably, all six athletes scored more than 1,000 points across their two best rides, highlighting the extraordinary standard of competition.

The remaining semi-final places went to Great Britain's Jack Purcell and Michael Rose, Ireland's Henri Kearney, and Germany's Felix Ramsayer.

Competition continues on Thursday with the highly anticipated Men's Kayak category taking to the water for the first time. The Canoe (C1) events will also begin, starting with the Women's C1 semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Junior Men will return to battle for places in the final, with only half of the remaining athletes progressing to medal contention.

After an exciting opening day, the stage is set for even more spectacular freestyle action as Europe's best paddlers continue their quest for continental titles in Finland.
