For the first time in the history of European Canoe Sprint Championships, master’s athletes were given the opportunity to compete as part of the main championships programme for European titles. A strong field of competitors took part in the 500-metre events in Portugal, and on the first day four official Masters European Champion titles were awarded.
The gold medals went to Germany, Denmark, and Ukraine. In the men's kayak 65–69 age group over 500 metres, Ukraine's Volodymyr Sabatov crossed the finish line first in a time of 2:06.192, finishing 3.269 seconds ahead of Spain's Gerardo Hueva and more than seven and a half seconds ahead of Portugal's Antonio Pereira.
In the 40–44 age group, Germany's Uwe Heider claimed victory with a time of 1:41.181. He finished 3.054 seconds ahead of the silver medallist, Czech paddler Jiri Kraft, while Germany's Marc Rossler secured the bronze medal, finishing just under five seconds behind the winner.
Two official sets of medals were also awarded in the K2 500-metre events. In the K2 500 Men 40–44 category, Germany's Marc Rossler and Uwe Heider took the title, finishing 2.474 seconds ahead of the French duo Maxime Beaumont and Christian Ducloix. Spain's Alejandro Narciso and Julio Fontan claimed third place.
Denmark celebrated victory in the K2 500 Men 60–64 category, where Per Selchau and Finn Landgreen-Petersen were the fastest crew. The multinational pairing of Janis Abolins and Igor Kozlov finished second, while Italy's Giuseppe Guarnotta and Max Patania took third place.
No official European Championship medals were awarded in the remaining events. In addition to athletes from Germany, Denmark, Ukraine, Spain, France, and Italy, participation medals were also earned by competitors from Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Azerbaijan.
