Sprint finalists confirmed in Grandtully ahead of decisive final day

Sprint finalists confirmed in Grandtully ahead of decisive final day 14.8.2026
The 2026 Paddle Europe Junior & U23 Wildwater Championships switched fully into Sprint mode on Friday, with two rounds of qualification on the Grandtully Rapids deciding the athletes and crews who will fight for the final individual European titles on Saturday morning

After two days of longer Classic racing, Day 3 brought an entirely different challenge. The short and explosive Sprint course demanded precision from the first paddle stroke, with athletes racing through the Grandtully Rapids and towards Fourth Falls in runs decided by fractions of a second.

No medals were awarded on Friday, meaning the Championship medal table remains unchanged after Day 2. France continues to lead with six gold medals and 15 medals overall, with Czechia also on 15 medals and Italy third with ten.

Fast starts secure direct qualification from Heat 1

The first objective of the day was simple: secure a place in the final immediately and avoid the pressure of a second run.

In Women’s K1 Junior, Belgium’s Jitte Onsia produced the fastest Heat 1 time with 1:14.47, only 0.40 seconds ahead of Slovenia’s Masa Simoncic. Germany’s Ronja Haseloff, Italy’s Milla Lazzarotto and Czechia’s Sandra Bergmannova also secured direct qualification.

The Women’s K1 U23 field saw Kristina Novosadova of Czechia lead the first heat in 1:11.62, ahead of Germany’s Luisa Puttkammer and Classic champion Anna Retkova.

Czechia also set the pace in both C1 categories. Jachym Hanzel was fastest in Men’s C1 Junior with 1:23.22, while Matej Vanek led Men’s C1 U23 in 1:19.89.

Men’s K1 Junior produced one of the quickest performances of the morning as France’s Elouan Nogues stopped the clock at 1:10.27. His teammate Loig Le Guennec was second, with Germany’s Arvid Muche third.

In Men’s K1 U23, Hynek Mika of Czechia led an extremely close Heat 1 in 1:09.45. Slovenia’s Tjas Til Kupsch followed just 0.15 seconds behind and Italy’s Lorenzo Pontarollo was only 0.27 seconds away from the fastest time.

Classic champions face the pressure of Heat 2

For those outside the direct qualifying positions, Heat 2 provided one final opportunity to reach Saturday’s title races.

Several athletes who had already enjoyed success in the Classic competition found themselves under pressure to deliver again.

Two-time Classic gold medallist Marilu Brambilla of Italy responded by winning Women’s K1 Junior Heat 2 in 1:21.80, securing her place in Saturday’s final.

Classic Men’s C1 Junior champion Petar Habek of Croatia also needed Heat 2 and delivered the fastest run of the round in 1:24.17.

France’s Gaetan Rousseau, winner of the Classic C1 U23 individual title on Wednesday, won his second Sprint heat in 1:22.49 to keep his hopes of another European title alive.

In Men’s K1 Junior, Austria’s Lukas Profanter was fastest in Heat 2 with 1:11.39, only 0.19 seconds ahead of Alessandro Monaro. Classic champion Enno Roggenbrodt also successfully progressed to the final.

One of the standout performances of the afternoon came from Belgium’s Lean Bogaerts, who won Men’s K1 U23 Heat 2 in 1:08.67 — quicker than the leading time recorded in the first heat — ahead of France’s Dimitri Tostain and Germany’s Finn Vogler.

C2 crews complete the qualifying day

The afternoon brought the C2 categories onto the Sprint course.

In Men’s C2 Junior Heat 1, Czechia’s Pavel Safarik and Jachym Hanzel were quickest in 1:18.06, followed closely by Italy’s Diego Efrem Babato / Alessandro Monaro and France’s Gabriel Dominique Daniel Auvolat / Emile Pichard.

The second heat was led by another Czech crew, Cenek Hitha / Filip Kopriva, who recorded 1:19.87.

France’s Dimitri Tostain / Jerome Payen, already Classic Individual champions and part of France’s winning Classic Team combination, continued their strong week by setting the fastest Men’s C2 U23 time in Heat 1 at 1:17.99.

Croatia’s Josip Slonjsak / Janko Presecki led Heat 2 to secure another place in the final.

The women’s C2 fields were small enough for the leading crews to secure their places without a second qualifying round. Czechia led both categories, with Tereza Marouskova / Valerie Capska fastest in Junior and Pavla Jilkova / Magdalena Mala leading U23.

Familiar names return for another title challenge

Saturday’s start list brings many of the athletes who have already shaped the Championships back onto the water.

In Women’s K1 Junior, Classic champion Marilu Brambilla will face Heat 1 winner Jitte Onsia, Milla Lazzarotto, Sandra Bergmannova and a deep 15-athlete field.

Anna Retkova, already one of the most successful athletes of the week, will contest both the Women’s K1 U23 and C1 U23 finals. She won Wednesday’s Classic K1 U23 title, added silver in Classic C1 and was part of Czechia’s winning C1 Team.

France’s Eve Vitali-Guilbert faces an especially busy final morning. The Classic C1 U23 champion is entered in the K1 U23 final, the C1 U23 final and later the Women’s C2 U23 final alongside Emma Lacoste.

Junior C1 and C2 could also provide another strong day for Czechia. Jachym Hanzel enters the C1 final after winning Heat 1 and will later join Pavel Safarik in the C2 final, where the pair will look to add a Sprint title to their Classic C2 Junior gold.

Great Britain will also have several chances on home water. Kerry Christie is through to both K1 U23 and C1 U23, while she will reunite with Emma Christie in the C2 U23 final after the sisters won the Classic title earlier in the week.

Twelve European titles on the line on Saturday morning

The final day begins at 09:00 with Women’s K1 Junior, before Men’s C1 Junior starts at 09:17 and Men’s K1 Junior at 09:31.

Women’s C1 Junior follows at 09:48, with the Junior C2 finals beginning at 10:02.

The U23 part of the final program starts with Women’s K1 at 10:23, followed by Men’s C1 at 10:40 and Men’s K1 at 10:54.

Women’s C1 U23 begins at 11:11, Men’s C2 U23 at 11:25 and Women’s C2 U23 will complete the individual Sprint finals from 11:37.

All 12 Sprint Individual events on Saturday’s final start list meet the minimum requirement of five participating National Federations for European Championship titles to be awarded.

With France and Czechia level on 15 total medals after the Classic competition and Italy also strongly positioned, Saturday’s Sprint finals could significantly reshape the medal standings before the Championships reach their conclusion.

After three days of competition, there is now no second chance. One run on the Grandtully Rapids will decide the final individual European champions of the week.
