One of the most symbolic moments came with the debut of the junior canoe Short Race events at the European Marathon Championships. In the first edition of the C1 Men Junior Short Race, Portugal’s Gabriel Fernandes wrote his name into history by becoming the first European champion in the category.
The new junior canoe Short Race events added an important new chapter to the competition programme, offering young canoe athletes another platform to compete for European titles and strengthening the pathway for the next generation of marathon paddlers.
The opening days also brought a historic achievement for Ireland. Caoilin Caffrey won bronze in the K1 Women Junior Short Race, becoming the first Irish woman to reach the podium at the European Canoe Marathon Championships. Her result marks an important step for Irish canoe marathon and adds another nation to the growing list of countries making their presence felt at European level.
Moldova also experienced a breakthrough moment in Bascov. Before this edition, Moldova had never reached the podium at the European Canoe Marathon Championships. That changed in remarkable fashion, first through Daniela Cociu, who became the first Moldovan European champion after winning the C1 Women Senior Short Race.
Shortly after, Mihai Chihaia added another historic medal for Moldova, claiming bronze in the C1 Men Senior Short Race. In the space of one afternoon, Moldova moved from having no European Canoe Marathon podiums to celebrating both a European title and a senior men’s bronze medal.
The 2026 Championships also delivered a major statistical milestone for Paddle Europe and the legacy of the former European Canoe Association. During the women’s Under 23 canoe programme, the 1000th medal in the history of the European Canoe Marathon Championships was awarded.
The current historical count now stands at 337 official events and 1011 medals awarded across the European Canoe Marathon Championships — a figure that reflects the long and growing history of the discipline in Europe.
These milestones show not only the competitive quality of the 2026 Paddle Europe Marathon Championships, but also the continued development of Canoe Marathon across the continent. New categories are opening doors for young athletes, new nations are reaching the podium, and the sport continues to build on a rich European tradition.
As the Championships continue in Romania, Bascov has already secured its place as a venue of historic firsts for European Canoe Marathon.
